KINETIC PHONAUTOGRAPH

the Graduation work of Undergraduate

A pair of black and white “KINETIC PHONAUTOGRAPH”. This art work was inspired by an anecdote of an invention of sound records. These shapes are based on the movement of the sound waves of certain each different sound sources.

The phonotograph is the world’s first phonograph invented by Édouard-Léon Scott (1817 – 1879), but it had a fatal defect that it was possible to record sounds however was impossible to play the sound again. Later, Edison’s cylindrical phonograph and Belliner’s disk phonograph were invented, these are known as records today.

The content of the sound source which was recorded in the phonotograph made by Édouard-Léon Scott was unknown for a long time. Finally, French team researched with computer analysis in 2008, and it turned out to be a French folk song “Au Claire de la Lune”.
The white “KINETIC PHONAUTOGRAPH” can be known the sound source with headphones, the black one cannot be known it to the contrary.
